A Dedication To Gretchen Ghent (1939 - 2011)

Gretchen Ghent (1939 – 2011)
Gretchen Ghent was a member of the Alberta Sports History Project since its early days in 2008. When we decided to develop an electronic library of sport history resources in Alberta, Gretchen took on the task of locating these many sources, deciding which to annotate and digitize, and developing the website structure to organize them all. She was relentless in her search for every morsel of information about the history of sports in Alberta. This project would not be where it is today without her vision and tireless efforts.
Gretchen willingly shared her many skills developed over a long career as a librarian and information scientist. She was a graduate of Ohio State University with an additional degree in library science from the University of British Columbia. She worked at the University of Calgary as a staff librarian for 25 years, retiring in 1995 as Librarian Emeritus. She devoted much of her spare time to the development of sport information internationally. She was a founding member of the North American Sport Library Network. She was also president of the International Association for Sport Information, and on the Editorial Board of the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education. She developed and maintained a Scholarly Sport Sites website, and contributed much to the world of sport information through conference presentations and articles.
Gretchen passed away suddenly on October 31, 2011 just as we were about to launch this website. We are struggling to continue without her, but she would never have wanted us to give up, not for a second. The Alberta Sport History Project, and all that it will become, is a tribute to her memory.
