“Victory on the Field” Educational Program
Teacher Planning Information

War has a profound meaning to all of us.  So many countries, families and people’s lives have been devastated through wars of the past and those that continue today. War also had an impact on sports and the history of sport in our country and province. We are always reminded through the media of the destruction and devastation of the war; but the history and impact of war on our country and province is sometimes untold or forgotten.  Sport events have always been one of the true advocates of friendships and peace between countries; they however were not excluded from the devastation of war.  Many great and promising athletes went to war and some of them lost their lives to the war; never to achieve their goals and dreams.  The history of the Olympic events postponed or boycotted because of war can fill history books itself dating back to 1986.

The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame and Museum has honoured members that shared in the after effects and destruction of war; and athletes that lost their lives to war.

Your students will explore the Victory on the field display and learn more about these Alberta athletes and learn more about the impact of war on our sport history and culture. The war also had a huge impact on organized sport in our province and women in sport.
